Synchronizing with Apple Keychain Access

I have been using 1Password for about a year and have slowly added logins as I have navigated to different URL's since installing your app. I still have 300+ logins (some possible duplicates) stored in Keychain Access. How do I efficiently import these logins into the 1Password application? At this point, opening a URL form within Keychain Access then adding the Login per the Safari Extension is very time consuming.

Also, once these Keychain Access Logins are added to 1Password, am I free to delete them from Apple's Keychain Access?!

Please assist - Thanks!

    Hi Andrew,

Thanks for taking the time to contact us. Unfortunately, there is not a way to import items from the OS X keychain en masse at this time. I'll pass your request for this along to the developers.

Once your data is safely stored in 1Password, it is up to you if you would like to remove it from the OS X keychain. I don't store anything in the OS X keychain myself. In fact, we recommend disabling your browsers' own password management when using 1Password.

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know. We are always here to help!

    Thanks for you response Khad.

In my case, such integration would be huge. Bringing this information into 1P is taking me forever.

Regardless, great product.. on my Macbook and 4S!

    Hi Andrew,

On Khad's behalf, you're very welcome! We'd love to get an import mechanism from the OS X Keychain up and running, sadly without APIs or export options in Keychain Access it is a little tricky.

If I am running 1Password 3 on my Mac. You wrote that you are suggesting to disable Apple Keychain Access.
But in Fact, I would like Keychain access to continue to in background.
Is it still possible? if for some reason, I would not want to use anymore 1Password, I would like to keep the freedom to go back to Keychain Access anytime without having some troubles to export data from 1Password.
BTW: Personally I think the Password generator from Keychain Access is better than yours, specially regarding the "pronounceable" passwords. Can you design an "as good as" Pass generator than Keychain Access?

please do not misunderstand me, when I mention I find Keychain Access, better, it is regarding its actual functionnalities. 1Password do have more functions that are today great without discussion. (cross platform access)

    Hi there,

I think there is some misunderstanding. We do not recommend disabling Keychain Access (and as far as I'm aware, there is not practical way to do so).

What we do suggest doing is disabling Safari's auto-fill. It is possible to leave it on, but it has been known to cause conflicts with the 1Password extension.

    Thanks!

    Hi Ben,
    thank you for the precision.
So does it mean that Keychain Access still do its job,
and therefore any passwords are still updating in KA when necessary?

    Oli,

Keychain Access would still serve it's purpose for things like WiFi credentials, app passwords etc, but 1Password won't and can't send any newly created Login / other items back to your OS X Keychain.

In most cases, for example website logins, you don't need to worry about this, since 1Password handles all of the browser integration, but things like WiFi passwords will still need to be entered manually when you connect to a network etc.

    Stu,
    Thank You for your help,

    just 2 more questions,
Keychain access got an Import items function but it seems that we can only import .keychain file format. I tried to select the "export items" but it remains grey, except for certificates or key (.p12, .pem, .cer, or .p7b file formats)
You have a format .1pif - 1Password interchange file (to merge different 1Password databases) or text file that are proposed to export data from 1P.
now or in the future may be,
    - Are you gone develop the .keychain file format as another option to export files? - or Will you update your import file formats' list with the Keychain Access file format? (I suppose that one of the reasons Apple is not proposing the API of KA, is to keep safer the KA. security) - or may be are they some turnaround to solve this issue, thx to some trick? ( the question is about to keep KA updated with all passwords and safe notes in one place, and with 1P to continue its job for online and syncing in the cloud, as it has been designed for)

    Hi Oli,

We can't really comment on what our developers are working on, so we don't have a way to tell you what is going to happen, all you can do is keep an eye on our blog and see what we announce.

I will point out that we do give you an export to CSV option, so if you ever do need to get something out of 1Password you always have that available to you. So keep that in mind. :)

    Thanks,
