Chrome Extension Error - Freezes on OS X Lion
Hello 1Password Team! I am currently experiencing issues with your chrome extension. I am using 1Password 3.8.6, Chrome 15.0.874.54 beta, and extension version 3.8.5.31080.
Basically, when opening Chrome and not having used the extension recently, I push the command + \ hotkey and the password window appears on the left side of my screen and freezes. The entire tab is unresponsive. I cannot type in the window, or close the tab. The only thing I can do is quit all of Chrome (sometimes requiring a force quit.) Clicking the 1P in a box seems to work without freezing. Opening another tab after the first one has frozen and using the hotkey works. Any ideas?

Sorry for the trouble here,
I haven't experienced this issue myself, but it sounds like there's something not quite right with the background process that controls the keyboard shortcuts. Could you open 1Password and go to Help > Troubleshooting > Restart Helper and let me know if that helps?

I don't have a restart helper, but I did use restart agent. I then restarted
Chrome, and the same problem occurred.

Hi, Matthew. Do you see the same freeze if you click the 1Password button in the toolbar? I have a suspicion that this might be related to the new combined logins view. If you have a lot of logins, it's possible that the process of showing them all could be bogging down the tab.

Nope. Clicking the button works fine!

That's indeed interesting, Matthew. I've noticed slower behavior for me when using the popover vs the inline window that pops up in Chrome when using the keyboard shortcut, but it hasn't been as slow as yours. I will ask Roustem to look into this.

Hi Matthew,
I suspect that the iframe animation combined with the additional loading of all Logins could be causing this problem. I am adding an extra delay before loading all Logins in the next update, hopefully this will help.

Alright! Let me know if there's anything I can test for you.

Bug number two: Clicking the button, entering the master password clears the
password and freezes the window. (Screenshot of frozen window:

Thank you for the update, Matthew!
I made a change in the latest beta of the Chrome extension (3.8.6. 31107).
I am still not sure if this is a bug in 1Password or a problem in the Chrome beta build. Unfortunately, I was not able to recreate this problem on my Mac.
11 Posted by mvd7793 on 04 Oct, 2011 05:20 PM
I installed the latest beta, which didn't fix it. Another screenshot of the
frozen window if it helps any: http://cl.ly/0T1g2g292Y1N130i2l21
Would it help for me to run some sort of diagnostic to give you more
information?
Thanks,
Matthew

Hi Matthew,
Thank you for the screenshot! Unfortunately, there is not much we can get out of the diagnostics or the process sample because it is all happening deep in Chrome somewhere. In theory, it should not be possible for the JavaScript code to freeze the whole browser, especially with the highly touted Multi-process Architecture.
I am not sure what to do at this point. Maybe try out Chrome 14 (or 16) and see if it is still happening there.

Hi, Matthew. I actually had one more idea to try if you're willing. From the looks of things, 1Password isn't able to load the rest of your logins. I'm attaching a screenshot of my logins section of the 1Password extension. As you can see, the latest release wants to show the logins for the current page as well as all the rest of your logins as well. Your screenshot shows that for some reason, 1Password isn't able to do this for you and I think this is where the freeze is coming from.
This is probably going to sound strange, but I'd like you to delete all your logins except for one. Make a fresh backup of your data first, of course, using the File > Backup menu in 1Password.
Quit Chrome with ⌘⌥Q and then open 1Password. Select all of your logins except for one and drag them to the trash in the 1Password sidebar. (You might want to empty the trash before you do this so it's easy to recognize which ones need restoring if you already have items in your trash.) Then, launch Chrome and navigate to the page for the lone remaining login. Invoke the keyboard shortcut and see if it still freezes.
Once you've completed the test, you can of course restore the deleted logins. If the freeze did not occur with the logins removed, could you try restoring just a few logins at a time (maybe 25 or so?) and repeat the test? This would let us know if it is a particular login that is causing the issue or if it's the number of logins. If you find the issue is triggered with one particular batch, try re-deleting them and then add them back one at a time to see if it's a particular login that's the issue. If you narrow it down to one in that group, skip it and try adding more logins back after that until you either identify the threshold where the freeze occurs or you identify the login(s) that may be causing the issue.
I realize this is a lot of fiddling, but I think it could really help with tracking down this issue, especially given that we cannot recreate it on our end. Thanks so much for your patience and assistance!

I'm having similar troubles. 1password works great when I press the button on the toolbar, but it freezes if I use the auto-fill keyboard shortcut (CMD+) IF I need to enter my master password. If my 1password keychain is already unlocked, and I therefore do not need to answer my master password, I am able to successfully use the keyboard shortcut. The tab freezes. Doing CMD+W closes the tab successfully, and I am able to open a new tab and resume working.
I lost some tickets to Radiohead when trying to fill in my CC# on ticketmaster.com (was excited, forgot I had to workaround this bug), so I'm kinda grumpy about this!
Let me know if there's any way at all I can help nail this bug.

Yeah it doesn't freeze the entire browser for me anymore.
@mgillman: Here are the instructions I received. I haven't had a chance to
try them yet but perhaps you can test them!!

problems and it fixed the extension problems as well.

Matthew, I'm glad you were able to get things working again.
Could you clarify for me if you went through the steps I outlined to test my theory? If so, what were the results? Was it a particular login that was causing issues or just the shear number of them?
Another interesting bit might be what hardware you're using. What model of Mac and its approximate age should be enough.
Thanks!

I didn't actually have a chance to go through them before I reverted to
Stable. Needed a working version of Chrome for a demo I was doing.
I'm on a MacBook Pro and bought it in June 2011. It should be the most
recent model (until they come out with the newer ones soon!)

Thanks for this information, Matthew. Unfortunately, it doesn't bring me any closer to an actual solution. Have you updated to 1Password extension 3.8.6 in Chrome? Are you still seeing the same issue? 3.8.6 is now the latest stable version and contains the changes that were in the beta channel, so I'm curious if you're still having trouble now that the updates have "followed" you back to the stable channel.

Same (similar) problems here. When starting Chrome for the first time and clicking on toolbar for 1Password, I enter the master password and click the button (or hit return) and nothing happens. 1Password screen freezes, contextual menu 'Unlock 1Password' does nothing. If I quit Chrome and restart, click on the 1Password icon in toolbar, extension works fine, and does not require me to login with master again. Annoying, but functional I suppose.
23 Posted by mvd7793 on 14 Nov, 2011 04:37 PM
Mine isn't even functional anymore. I'll get to trying the debug steps when
I have an hour or so.

We're still trying to narrow this down, but a solution that has been reported to work in cases with similar symptoms is starting with a new Chrome profile:
http://support.agilebits.com/kb/browser-extensions/how-to-create-a-...
I actually ran into the issue myself, and creating a new profile solved the issue with no recurrence.
Please make sure you follow the steps in the support article carefully and let me know how it goes.

I think it is extension conflict.
I've encountered this problem before. I found to disable [smooth gestures] and problem is gone.
I think you can try to disable all extension first, then enable one by one, to find which cause conflict.

For me, it happened in incognito mode too even though 1password was the only incognito extension allowed to run.

scorpio995,
A change in Chrome 15 is affecting a few unrelated extensions, and, unfortunately, there is not a way that we are aware of to fix this apart from setting up a new Chrome profile or, in some cases, install a newer version of Chrome (16 or later) with a fix included. In most cases, creating a new profile works. For some users, they find that the issue is only resolved once upgrading to Chrome 16.
http://www.google.com/landing/chrome/beta/
In extremely rare cases the problem is not resolved until upgrading to Chrome 17.
http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/eula_dev.html?dl=mac
In all of our testing we've not seen any consistent, reproducible conflict with any other extension(s), but if you have additional data we would love to know what steps we can take to reproduce the issue here.
Matthew's experience seems to align with our own in this regard. If we can be further assistance, please let us know. We are always here to help!
Cheers,

Re-creating a Chrome profile doesn't help.
It seems to occur also when the dark grey bar wants to appear. I have crashed Chrome several times in this situation. This is VERY VERY annoying when doing a credit-card transaction. This already resulted in loosing some deals...
This is a very worrying and I'm not used to a bug like this of Agilebits! Please help us!

Vincent, I'm terribly sorry that you are having this problem. Did you read my post directly above yours? Did things improve when you followed the steps I listed? Specifically, what were your results when you upgraded to Chrome 16?
Please let me know. I'd love to get this issue with Chrome sorted out for you.

I don't have Chrome 16 yet.
I have created a new profile and it worked for a short while and now
it is broken again.
I trying to eliminate plugins in this case, because it should be
something like that.
I'm also experiencing more unstable Javascript in Chrome, so keep you updated.
